1945: Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory opens Excerpted from the timeline at the IBM History site A renovated fraternity house on Manhattan's West Side is the location of the Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory. It is IBM's first laboratory devoted to pure science. The research staff includes renowned mathematician and theoretical physicist Llewellyn H. Thomas. Thomas Watson dedicates the lab with a press release stating, "The research and instructional resources of the laboratory will be made available to scientists, universities and research organizations in this country and abroad, and special cooperative arrangements will be made with scholarly institutions." The lab is the forerunner of IBM's Research Division, which today operates seven research laboratories around the world.
