by B. Ullmer and H. Ishii

Biographical sketches of authors

Brygg Ullmer   MIT Media Laboratory, 20 Ames Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139-4307 (electronic mail: ullmer@media.mit.edu). Mr. Ullmer is a Ph.D. candidate and IBM Media Lab Fellow in the Tangible Media Group of the MIT Media Laboratory. After graduating from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics in 1991, he received a B.S. in computer engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1994, and a master's degree from the MIT Media Laboratory in 1997. He has held summer positions with the University of South Carolina Industrial Mathematics Initiative (19901992), Interval Research Corporation (19931995), and Sony CSL (2000). His current research interests include tangible and graphical user interfaces for distributed information, network and computing infrastructure, and biological systems, as well as rapid physical and functional prototyping. His publications and additional information are on line at http://tangible.media.mit.edu/~ullmer/.

Hiroshi Ishii   MIT Media Laboratory, 20 Ames Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139-4307 (electronic mail: ishii@media.mit.edu). Dr. Ishii is an associate professor at the MIT Media Laboratory, where he founded and directs the Tangible Media Group. His research focuses on the design of seamless interfaces between humans, digital information, and the physical environment. Prior to coming to MIT, he led a CSCW research group at the NTT Human Interface Laboratories from 19881994, where his team invented TeamWorkStation and ClearBoard. In 1993 and 1994, he was a visiting assistant professor at the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr. Ishii received a B.E. degree in electronic engineering in 1978, and the M.E. (1980) and Ph.D. (1992) degrees in computer engineering, all from Hokkaido University. He is active in the research fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), and has served as a program committee member of many international conferences including ACM CHI, CSCW, UIST, SIGGRAPH, Multimedia, and ECSCW. Dr. Ishii is currently an associate editor of ACM TOCHI (Transactions on Computer Human Interactions). His publications and additional information are on line at http://tangible.media.mit.edu/~ishii/.
