This paper introduces, at a high level, the key topics relevant to continuous availability of IBM systems infrastructures. We recognize that this issue of the IBM Systems Journal cannot cover all of the relevant topics in this domain. Therefore, our intent is to cover a wide range of topics and critical areas of focus in this field. We provide a context for the papers in this issue as well as pointers for further investigation, for those wishing to obtain a comprehensive view of the topic. After defining terms and identifying what is encompassed in the scope of continuous availability of IBM system infrastructures, we explain the IT lifecycle of planning and execution through which an IT organization and its infrastructure pass to create and continuously improve the IT infrastructure. Throughout, we show how each of the subsequent papers expands on this discussion.
