While the most obvious application of Facial Pointing is as a mouse replacement, there are many other applications.
One that we have explored is as a screen magnifier.
Users often have difficulty reading the screen because of the density of information presented. Imagine having the system magnify the portion of the screen you were currently looking at, leaving the rest small to give you a sense of context. As a practical matter, basing magnification on where the user's eyes are aiming presents a host of problems. Eye movements are fast and difficult to control accurately. Moreover, you have the problem of moving your eyes to read what is in the magnification window without moving the window itself. If we move the window based on head movement instead, we now have a method of control which is much more natural - we commonly aim our head to focus on something while our eyes examine it in more detail.
By altering our transfer functions slightly, were have been able to use facial pointing to position a screen magnifier. The window is placed where you aim your nose, allowing your eyes to examine the window comfortably. The window is easy to position and read, leaving the hands free for the keyboard and mouse. In the screen dump above you can see the magnification application in the top left corner, showing the user aiming their face, and the magnification window itself near the top center. |
