What is OpenDX?

Open Visualization Data Explorer is a visualization framework that gives users the ability to apply advanced visualization and analysis techniques to their data. These techniques can be applied to help users gain new insights into data from applications in a wide variety of fields including science, engineering, medicine and business. Data Explorer provides a full set of tools for manipulating, transforming, processing, realizing, rendering and animating data and allow for visualization and analysis methods based on points, lines, areas, volumes, images or geometric primitives in any combination. Data Explorer is discipline-independent and easily adapts to new applications and data. The integrated object-oriented graphical user interface is intuitive to learn and easy to use. Current Status

Welcome to the IBM Research Open Visualization Data Explorer Project.

As of 5/24/99, IBM Visualization Data Explorer is now IBM Open Visualization Data Explorer! We are currently working with the visualization / developer community to bring the open source codebase up to the same quality level as the product codebase.

Users who do not have the expertise or the desire to tackle the build process should monitor this site (or the opendx-announce mailing list) for the existence of a binary version that matches their particular machine architecture. We are still working out the details for collecting and distributing binaries. In the meantime, if you would like access to 3.1.4 product binaries please select the Transition aids for users of IBM Visualization Data Explorer link listed below.

Currently we have four mailing lists to discuss issues related to OpenDX. We also have jiterbug setup to handle bug tracking. For more information, see the links below.

We want to establish a user community around OpenDX. To do so, we must create binaries for as many architectures as possible. If you are a developer, we need your help! We anticipate problems arising as people build OpenDX in different environments. If you post the problems that you encounter and the fixes that you find, we will correct the codebase. Part of going open source involved restructuring and modifying the codebase; expect frequent (daily?) updates to the source until things become stable. We are using cvs for source control, links are below.

Finally this site is a work in progress, please bear with us as we transition from Visualization Data Explorer to Open Visualization Data Explorer.
