Game 4, white
37.Nd4
Commentary for white move 37:
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Well, that's what I'm trying to achieve for
white is some kind of a crazy rook ending where I might be able
to save the game. Just putting a variation on Fritz now, which
is Rb4, Rg2 Nf4 Nxf4 Rxf4 Rxf4 exf4 Rxc2, and in these kinds of
crazy endings --
DB MOVE: 36 Nd4
YASSER SEIRAWAN: We see Deep Blue has sacrificed a pawn,
offering a pawn sacrifice.
MAURICE ASHLEY: It looks temporary.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Does it?
MAURICE ASHLEY: If Nxd4 exd4 Rxd4, then Rg1?
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Well, one of the things that the computer
would
love to do is wipe out the pawns on e5, g7, g6, and h4. Take
those four pawns off the board then what you have on the
queen-side is 3 vs. 2, 3 vs. 2 pawn and rook ending. Although
with four rooks black would have excellent possibilities of
winning, but with a single rook it's known as a book draw. And
that's an interesting question. We have to ask that of the IBM
team. If it has a database of the 3 vs. 2 rook and pawn
endgames.
MAURICE ASHLEY: Yes. I'm sure they have any database in
existence, they must have.
YASSER SEIRAWAN: Absolutely. Well, yeah, yeah.
