Game 1, white
9.h3
Commentary for white move 9:
Mr. VALVO: The computer was thinking on Garry's time, and
guessed what Garry's move was going to be, so that by the time
Garry played the move it had already decided what it was going
to do. Now, actually the truth is a combination of the two.
We don't know what it was exactly. But Garry played a move
which caused it to go back into book and went right for it.
But on the other hand it could have guessed that Garry was
going to do that move, too. I think that Garry just simply
made a move that brought it back into book and it said, "Great,
I'm back in my known territory, that's what I'm going to do."
Mr. SEIRAWAN: That's actually one of the things that happens a
lot, especially amongst humans versus computer games, the
human
tries to be very clever in thought by not committing themselves
to a particular opening, and then, like it or not, they end up
falling into a known position and then the computer says,
"Whew, okay, I survived these early moves and we have another
move."
Mr. ASHLEY: We do indeed have another move, and the computer
has
played h6. Oh, after e2-e3 by Kasparov, the computer has
played h7-h6, which is a cagey little move, not really doing
anything too much.
