Updates to the burr puzzles site

Complete overhaul of the site
  • changed all the mastheads and page layouts to conform to IBM's new graphical style. Used frames to display the major parts of this site as a navigation bar on the left side of the browser window.
  • redid most of the graphics to give them a more professional and better coordinated look and feel. The sample character graphics have been redone using POV-Ray, a 3D raytracing program.
  • added the definition of a millable piece type see def 9.2
  • added puzzle.cab for faster load of java applets in Microsoft's Internet Explorer
  • inversed z axis to match left handed coordinate system as used in normal 3D graphics programs like POV-Ray.
  • added piece length as a paramter to the java applet
  • broke the samples section into several smaller pages and added a few more sample burrs.

  • added Bill Cutler's results for holey six-piece burrs to the six-piece burr page.
  • fixed java applet to display white background color under Microsoft's Internet Explorer
  • added puzzle.zip file allowing Netscape clients to load the java applet much faster
  • fixed the JavaScript in Cutlers 314 solid notchable solutions file.

  • fixed the publication year of E. Wyatt's "Puzzles in Wood" booklet to the correct year of 1928.

  • added Bill Cutler's complete exploration of general six-piece burrs to the Historical overview. page.
  • removed the PuzzlePiecesViewer applet and replaced with the text only alternative pages (reason: Microsoft Internet Explorer crashes and hangs the system when executing this applet). The following files have been removed due to this change: PuzzlePiecesCanvas.class, PuzzlePiecesViewer.class, PuzzleScrollbar.class, Burr3Pieces.html

  • added Bill Cutler's "Holey 6-Piece Burr!" and "A Computer Analysis of All 6-Piece Burrs" publication to the Bibliography.
  • added new sample burrs from the above publications to the Explore precalculated burrs page.

  • fixed the java code to correctly recognize all disjoint pieces
  • added the binary piece numbers to the display of the pieces in the calculate your own burr puzzle applet.
  • added the definition of piece numbers (see Six-piece burrs)
  • added a JavaScript page showing all 314 solutions of the solid burr using notchable pieces.
  • Added jvk's 25.2 derivation level 3 burr (see Explore precalculated burrs)

  • fixed the java code so Winkler's level 3 burr gets calculated correctly
  • fixed the solution to Coffin's improved burr (see Explore precalculated burrs)
  • Added Winkler's level 3 burr (see Explore precalculated burrs)
  • Added Winkler's complex level 5 burr (see Explore precalculated burrs)
  • fixed all footers to align the navigation bar to the left
  • Changed the Yahoo search from "Puzzles" to "Burr Puzzle" to get a more concise search criteria and added a link to the Alta Vista search engine for burr puzzles. (see Bibliography)
  • Changed the main page and all footers to include the images into the links.
  • Added this page of update history to the site
